The Giver was a very different book that really makes you wonder. I did my Hero's Journey on Jonas. A boy who goes to the Ceremony of 12 where all the children who are turning 12 get a job for them to do until they have to go The House of the Old. He gets to have a very special job that only 1 person gets not very often. This person is called the Receiver of Memories. They get to keep every memory that once lived among these people. You see a very long time ago they decided that they wanted to ban every memory that might be painful or cause suffering. While trying to do this they ended up pretty much getting rid of everything color included. So for Jonas to get this job it was a very big deal. He had the privilege or at least what people thought to be a privilege to learn about the things that nobody has ever known. He learned what pain is and colors and happy and sad and what being released is and that really affects him a lot. He takes Gabe who is scheduled to be released the following morning and he runs away to save him.
Here is the Hero's Journey:
The separation is When Jonas gets the job as being the receiver. He has to pretty much leave his friends and work much harder than they ever would have to.
The calling is to receive the dreams and memories for the village so they do not have to suffer.
The threshold is the day he gets the gift or burden depending on which way you look at it during the ceremony of 12.
The descent is walking into the room to see the giver. He see all these book and all the things that are banned in the community.
The Initiation is when he starts to get memories and he gets to see colors and the good and the bad.
The abyss is not knowing what the pain he will be receiving is what colors are.
The mentor is the giver because he helps Jonas through this very difficult time and in a way Gabe the baby also inspires him to continue with running away. He did all that just for Gabe so to not survive would be heart breaking for Jonas so he pushed even though he was really close to the end.
The transformation was when he decided to stand up for what was really right and he ran away just to save Gabe .
The creation was running and running until he felt like he couldn't anymore and still pushing himself till he found a little town that he had seen in one of his memories. A warm, nice, sweet, little town.
