The way you get respect at home is by helping out on things that need to be done without anyone telling you or reminding you. At school you get respect by giving respect and treating people the way you want to be treated. When your in a team the way you get respect is by helping your teammates when they can't do some stuff right and cheering them on.

The Giver is a book about a” hero", a young boy named Jonas. Jonas's world is nothing like the world you and I know. His journey begins with him feeling apprehensive about a ceremony that is held for every child that turns 12 that year. This special ceremony is his calling to receive his"assignment" in the community. The "Receiver of Memories" is the special role the council of the community gives to Jonas. Jonas knows this title is very important and when he accepts it from the council, it is his threshold.The society that Jonas lives in, is a place where equality or "sameness" have been achieved. A place where war, hatred, and violence have been made obsolete. Love, unfortunately has also been wiped out. But memories of what life was like still exist to an individual who has the title of "Receiver of Memories". So Jonas who has been chosen to become the new receiver must go to the current receiver to start his training. His descent takes place when he goes to see the receiver for his training.The current receiver becomes Jonas's mentor. But now since Jonas is the new receiver his mentor is now the "Giver". The giver explains to him what Jonas's assignment is for, the memories he is to receive and why? Jonas at first doesn't understand what the giver means by memories, the giver then gives him a memory of going down a hill on a snow sled. This was something he never experienced and as his training went on, Jonas started to understand these memories and why only he and the giver had them. As time passed on and the memories that he had received about love and the joy life could be, he started to think about releasing the memories to the community. The reason for this is because the community doesn't know anything about the memories that the giver and he possess and Jonas wants everyone to experience the way life used to be.Jonas and the giver then start talking about this matter and the giver agrees that they should go ahead and release the memories to the community. Jonas decided that he should release the memories because of what he witness his father doing. He killed the lighter of two baby twins and Jonas knew this was wrong and he realized how the community doesn't have real feelings of right and wrong. The giver explained to him how he can release the memories by simply leaving the community and all the memories he had would be released to the community. As Jonas prepared to escape he found out that his father was going to release another baby named Gabriel that Jonas had grew quite fond of. So his organized plan to escape was rush to save the boy and as he managed to retrieve the boy he made his way on beyond the community.This was his transformation as he escaped and decided that releasing the memories would be best for the community. On his journey to escape he didn't knew exactly where he would go and as he went on to find a new home, he finally reached a snow covered hill like the one in the first memory he had received. He then went down it with Gabriel and slowly started to drift into unconsciousness. But with all the knowledge he knew he would create a new and better world for himself, Gabriel, and anyone he would encounter.

the hero's journey is basically a hero of every movie or book who goes threw pain,obstacles and faces dangers in order to get where he needs be. that's why i think that that the hero's journey relates to the book The Giver because in the book Jonas is born with a gift, a gift that makes him diff rent from anybody alts and at the same time a hero.Jonas was only twelve when he was called to be the receiver of memory Jonas was scared, he didn't know what the meant or until later he would leave his home and and start his training with the giver,which would be his mentor. i think that every hero goes threw a time where they find out about themselves just like Jonas did.
when Jonas got the first taste of how the world was really like,Jonas felt cold because that was the first memory he received from the giver but later he felt sadness, anger ,love ,happiness and violence. it was then when Jonas realized the cruel ways there town lives in.
Jonas was angry at the way people aloud people or baby's to die and then called it a realise,he was also sad that his dad was a part of it Jonas was full of anger and sadness at the same time when he saw the poor baby get realised he couldn't look at his dad but then again there was nothing that he could do about it it was Joneses job to receive and to take the pain that every one should be going threw.Jonas had a little brother his name was Gabe Jonas and Gabe had the same gray eyes that made them diff rent and special,Jonas was told that Gabe was going to be realised if he didn't grow a certain amount, so Jonas knowing what that meant he came up with a plan a plan to escape and let every one feel what he was feeling Jonas told the giver his plan to see what he would say the giver "said it would be a disaster but i could work if they planned it well.so they planed it the plan was that Jonas would run away as far as he could so that they couldn't find him.
the plan was set but what Jonas didn't know was that after the day that people would wake up and not find him would be the day Gabe would be realised when Jonas herd this from his parents his plans changed. the day Finally came and Gabe and Jonas took off. The people in there town looked for them and never found them Jonas and Gabe got to their happy place and the people back in there town were left to deal with there own feelings, i think that Jonas was a hero in this book because he saved Gabe his little brothers life and said enough took a chance and got his happy ending .

Crystal Schmiesing- Final Exam Essay
Jonas from The Giver for sure completed a hero’s journey. It took a lot to have to take the pain of being the giver. Knowing what others could not, having no one to tell. No one to talk to about all his pain, suffering, and anger. Dealing with everything basically on his own, how could you not go crazy, I mean really? I would go insane. Having to deal with pain, pain you’ve never known before. The only pain you’ve ever known was slamming you finger in the door. How did he handle it so well? I can’t even imagine.
When Jonas had to show up his first day at the Giver’s house he walked in and saw a lady sitting at a desk. She called the giver on a little intercom asking if Jonas could be let in, he noticed that the Giver’s place had locks on all the doors. Which was very odd to him seeing as how nothing was supposed to have locks. When he stepped into the room where the Giver was the first thing he noticed were all these books. There were shelves and shelves of them. He thought it was amazing how the Giver could just turn off the announcements.
Jonas really didn’t like having to be the giver. It meant being alone, for the most part, because as it said you couldn’t tell anyone anything, you can’t show anyone your pain. They couldn’t understand even if you were able to tell them. You have to remember they know nothing of pain, all they know is "perfect", which means they honestly know nothing at all. They know rules, they’re taught to do what is consider right, when they do something wrong they get a get a slap on the hand and are assumed to never do it again. Like once Jonas was waiting in line to get a snack and out loud he said he wanted his smack because well he was a little kid what did he know. So they gave him his smack.
The heroic part of this story, I think, was when Jonas planned to run away but when he found out that they were going to release( kill) Gabe he decided he had to take him with him. That was just about the most exciting part of the book, he gets on his bike and he makes it out of the community. He keeps going and going and its like he makes it to the real world, with real people who feel and think for them selves. Romance Hero - "The Great Gatsby"
The Romance Hero is a mysterious person with also a mysterious past and mysterious origin. The Romantic Hero lives it's life through suffering trying to gain back something that was lost and desires the most. In "The Great Gatsby" Jay become a Romantic Hero. Gatsby does extraordinary things to get back and be with his loved one, Daisy; but all he does takes him no where but to his own death.
When Gatsby realizes that Daisy would never marry him because he was poor and Her family would not allow, Gatsby worked and got into illegal businesses to become rich and get Daisy back, but changed his name and never mention to anyone about his family. After Daisy marries tom Gatsby buys a house on the other side of the river, where Daisy lives. Everynight he would watch the lights on the dock from Daisy's house. Gatsby knew what he needed to know about Daisy's life except he didnt know that she had a daughter.
Gatsby finds himsel a faithfull followerin Nick, Daisy's cousin. Nick later on finds out what happened between daisy and Gatsby. Nick gets tested by Gatsby by having Nick arrange a meeting between the two lovers. After the meeting Daisy and Gatsby continue seen eachother. Another test Nick goes through is keeping the two lovers relationship in sectret and away from Tom.
gatsby does alot of things for Daisy's love. The betryal to the Romantic Hero comes when Gatsby covers up for Daisy after she runs over Myrtle and killing her thinknig that this accident will give them the chance to escape. gatsby gets killed by George Wilson, then Daisy betrays Gatsby by not going to his funeral but only Nick and Gatsby's father and Daisy forgetting what had happened.

For all of you who have not read The Giver, by Lois Lowry, I highly recommend this book to read. For those who have read it I give my respect to them. This book is based on a theory of relativity or sameness. It takes place after many centuries have past when it was first adopted. It is a society of absolute sameness where rarely an unforeseen event occurs. Where their land is flat and everything is a shade of black and white. In this case the color black would represent the unknown or unseen
Jonas is the main character of this story. He goes through a so-called hero’s journey. Jonas starts his journey when he attends the ceremony of twelve. At this ceremony of twelve there is a procedure that a child goes through to determine his or her job. It is a cycle or the unity of their community. Jonas however, is skipped over and did not receive his title. He is in the threshold when everyone at the ceremony realizes at the ceremony realizes that Jonas has been skipped over. He believes that they had forgotten him and that his job maybe worse than any other job. He starts his decent when at the end of the ceremony the announcer states that she is sorry for the anxiety and focuses on Jonas. She tells the crowd that she has skipped Jonas for a very special reason. That he had been chosen to be the next receiver of dreams. This certain job was held as the highest honor. The receiver would receive memories of the past and was to counsel on tasks of great confusion to the community.
On the first day of his assignment Jonas was supposed to show up to a room behind the house of the old, which is a relatively large house. This room could be thought of as the abyss. The doors had locks on them, which was very unusual to him because there were hardly any locks on doors. This room puzzled him because when he was let in, there was a desk in the middle of it. On the right of this desk was another door with locks as well. The person at the desk requested permission to send Jonas in. when Jonas entered the room he was astonished to see a little screen in the corner of the room towards the ceiling with a speaker under it, as well as a little bed in the corner and shelf after shelf after shelf full of books. This is where his mentor lives out his lives. His mentor is the Giver of dreams. The giver mentors him on how to deal with the dreams and memories that he receives from him. The giver is aged in looks but not in actual age. The burden of all the memories has filled him with stress, pain, and anguish. Jonas begins to transform mentally and starts to put more thought into his dreams and thoughts. Jonas soon realizes that the way things are ran in his society is different and wrong from how they used to be decades before, he takes the initiative and decides that he would try to escape the unpleasant world lives in. one night he decides to leave and take a baby with him, named Gabe, who the society was going to release or put to death in a manor of speaking.
He returns to the place where his memories remind him of. Some think he finds a city where sameness doesn’t rule. Personally I believe that at the end of the journey he returns to where all others who seek the impossible and succeed in their own way. He returns to the memories in which he believed in so much. His journey ends with his death; seeking something that may no longer exist. Jonas reminds us that we need to hold onto our beliefs until the very end. That we should follow what we believe is truly right and pure. To also deal with the difficulties along the way.

The Great Gatsby a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a great example of the “American Dream”. The American dream is a greatly misunderstood in my opinion. Yes the American dream is to do well in life whether it is physical, mentally socially or even in the typical economic form but it is all in a destructive form.
The reason I say that the Great Gatsby is a good example is that it does express the destructive form. Gatsby also illustrates another key factor to the American dream and it is that he reinvented himself. He turned himself from a poor army boy to a rich businessman. He went as far as to change his name so that he could change as much possible of himself.
The destructiveness of Gatsby is that the only thing he wanted was Daisy but the only was he was able to get to Daisy was by becoming rich any way possible, which was his strong connections with Meyer Wolfsheim in his strongly suggested illegal practices. Another great example of the destructiveness of the book is the way Daisy and Ton exploited everyone they meet and without regards could at any one moment throw them away as if they were trash and go on living their lives. Tom exploited Daisy and Myrtle. Myrtle cheated on George. Daisy too was having and affair with Gatsby. And lastly Nick who was is suppose to be the innocent one was looking for a reason to leave his girl back home (even if it was a ridiculous reason) to get together with the pretty tennis player Jordon.

The Giver is about a very advanced community that is very simplistic at the same time is full of complex rules.There are many people in this community one of them named Jonas. Jonas at first is the same as the other kids in the community but after the ceremony o0f twelve everything changes. Jonas has been chosen to be the Receiver of memories. The initiation happenswhen Jonas Recieves His First Memory during one of his classes. he gets visions of a world other than his own.When the creation happens is also when Jonas begins to show noticable changes. The giver is Jonas' mentor throught his entire journey. The Giver over time creates a new Jonas.After all his training Jonas now has a calling. As to the pollution in our world that causes an illness so malicious and unexpected it creeps with no warning. We first have to get rid of everything that causes the world to be polluted with this illness. We would have to get rid of every sing bit of gold, silver, and anything that is valuable that will make your mind polluted. Even money. Dispose of material pocessions that cause harm to yourself and others.
This pollution causes death between famillies and friends. It will drive you crazy without you knowing how much it affects you.
To be succesful in getting rid of this illnes completely, destroying the material that causes the obssesion. It drives you to make such terible deeds or even think them.

In the Giver you could say that the families in that book are functional, well to them. They wake up every morning and do everything perfect you could say. Everyday thay do the same thing.

Although at the end of his journey he did not get what he wanted. Jay Gatsby still wen through the steps of the hero's journey. In my opinion I still think he dod go throug all the steps in the heros journey because he fought for what he belived. Jay gatsby separation was when he left for the war. He left the person he loved Daisy. Gatsby did not really have a calling he was forced to leave Daisy behind and go to the war. Jonas doesn't know what it's like to feel the urge and desire to be better than the rest because they are all the same and equal. He doesn't know what it's like to live in a competitive world full of poverty and starvation. The fact that he doesn't understand those feelings makes his dream much different than the superficial and stereotypical idea of the American dream.
The way Jonas' life is set up to be the perfect life makes his dream much different than you would think. I view his dream as him being able to share the pleasures and horrids of his memories. He wants the rest of the community to realize what it's like to feel pain, happiness, sadness, starvation, pleasure and most of all he would like his community to feel love. His dream is not to have the pleasures of life we all want but to share the pleasure of his feelings; to know the difference between right and wrong and how to make their own decisions.

The Giver was a very different book that really makes you wonder. I did my Hero's Journey on Jonas. A boy who goes to the Ceremony of 12 where all the children who are turning 12 get a job for them to do until they have to go The House of the Old. He gets to have a very special job that only 1 person gets not very often. This person is called the Receiver of Memories. They get to keep every memory that once lived among these people. You see a very long time ago they decided that they wanted to ban every memory that might be painful or cause suffering. While trying to do this they ended up pretty much getting rid of everything color included. So for Jonas to get this job it was a very big deal. He had the privilege or at least what people thought to be a privilege to learn about the things that nobody has ever known. He learned what pain is and colors and happy and sad and what being released is and that really affects him a lot. He takes Gabe who is scheduled to be released the following morning and he runs away to save him.

Daisy has a family, a child and a husband. He does'nt give up though. He desires Daisy more than anything in the world and he doesnt want to lose her. Gatsby has a lot of party's at his house. He doesnt even know the people who attend his party's. I think its pretty dumb because something bad could happen to him. For example, he could get robbed for the stuff he has in his house or they can damage his house.
Their is alot of drama and violence in this story. There is couples who are not happy with their partners and cheat on one another. Mertle gets ranned over and dies. Riley Rowe Final Exam Essay
Imagine lining in a society where everything, in our perspective is wierd. There is no color and everything is black and white. Peoples job are chosen for them at a younge age of 12 as well. There is no say in what type of interests or idead you have in the working field. In the book The Giver the main character, Jonas, was living in this type of societ. They had a pretty safe, calm society that had some restrictions in it that would seem normal to us. Simple love or affection would be considered wrong and the sorrow killing of babies wasn't there. The hero's journey that Jonas goes through really makes him realize what kind of place he is living in.
When the book begins, Jonas is 11 years old and is about to celebrate what they call the ceremony of 12 (birthday). When your job is selected you must go and practice with the recent people that do your job. Jonas has to practice in a deep, dark room that he thought wasn't a good idea. This is when the abyss of the journey apears. The recent Giver on top of everything else seems real old and creepy to him. He was hesitant to talk or do anything in the room because of the way the room looked to him.
Jonas learned that the Giver holds memories from the past and that would also help offer advise for decision making. So Jonas eases up and starts to get trained for to become the Giver.
He actually realizes that the giver is not so bad and then is when the recent giver becomes his mentor. The giver shows Jonas everything he knows about memories.
Gabe is not doing so well later in the book so they decide to execute him. But not before Jonas witnesses an exicution of another kid.
Gabe actuall realizes how bad his community is so he stills Gabe and sneaks out late at night. He has a struggle to protect Gabe and keep him alive so he gives Gabs all the memories he has. He ends up sliding down the hill and leave the reader with an unknown ending.
This was a great book that really makes us realize how lucky america is and how good we got it.

The GreatGatsby, a journeys hero?. I believe it is a Romance hero to me. Look inside the Great Jay Gatsby your typical rich man. But to anyone, no one knows where he came from or how he became rich, all except for one.
So there's mysteries to this Jay Gatsby his past, back in Louisville only one knows, only one can tell. Romance hero, where there is magic of how Mr. Gastby is so rich. Jay Gatsby lives on West Egg as to all the ones who inherited theirs live on East Egg. Gatsby has a dream that is of Daisy he wants her so much he is willing to do anything.
When he returns to the war, he finds Daisy married but in order for him to even reach her, he needs to get money. As his wise old man, comes Dan Cody who leaves Gatsby a fortune, but unforuntely he can't have it due to codys' problems with a woman. Dan Cody taught Gatsby alot. Gatsby admired him. So here comes his next mentor, Mr. Wolfshiem." Who made Gatsby what he was." He builds Gatsby, and now he is rich enough to follow his dream.
Later on, in the following of days Gatsby has a faithful follower known as Nick Carraway, who came for vacation as Daisys' cousin. The next following days and weeks Gatsby and Nick become real good friends. Gatbsy now needs to test his follower. He wants Nick to arrange a tea party so Nick can invite Daisy over and let Gatsby come over. Magic reappears as Daisy and Gatsby kiss!
Now we have a lot of numbner threes. Gatsby, Nick and Daisy, how they meet for old couple to rekindle their love. Myrtle, Tom and Nick, this is where the cheaters arrange a "car" meeting at George's garage to see each other and get that moment to make another arrangement, but this also puts Nick in the middle. The living Tom, Daisy and Jordan where at the end the ones that caused all the suffering are alive. The not so lucky deceased Gatsby, Myrtle and George the ones that were just simply asking for something, but getting teased are killed because of the others.

The Giver - Hero's Journey Jessika Serrano
You can find the Hero's Journey in the great book The Giver. The Giver is a story about a complex community that is based on daily routine. They know only know few things and have no feelings. Death means nothing to them, neither does pain or suffering. Everyone and everything is the same. There is no superiors or conflicts.
Among all the people in this communityis Jonas. Jonas is a young boy who is like the others, until the celebration of 12. At the age of 12 he realizes he is chosen to be receiver. He will have lessons with the Giver to receive painful and joyful memories that the rest of the community knows nothing about.
The initiation is when Jonas begins his classes. When he recieves his first memory. When he starts to know the whole other world is the initiation. The Giver to me is what we call the mentor.He teaches and guides Jonas in his Journey.
When the creator comes in is when Jonas becomes different. As he starts to think differently and realize more things. The Creator created a new Jonas. At the end of all this changing within Jonas you find his transformation. Now he has completely transformed.
Now Jonas has a calling. His calling is to let the community know whats out there. It is also to go out and find himself. So he decides to save another life and begin another journey. He leaves the comfort of his home and the company of his family. This is the seperation.

The word that I picked up to define is courage. The definition for courage is to state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicisstudes with self-possesion and resolution. My own definition for courage is you are to do anything with out fear or scared. the origin for courage came from Old French. Three languages for courage is in spanish-valores, Middle English-corage, Latin-cor. The history of its use is that it came from Old French and it started to spread out and people saying it.
I used the word in a movie that is called Whale Rider. Its a movie about a little girl rides a whale and that she does everything behind her grandpas back. The grandpa dont want her to get involve what the boys are doing. I think that she has courage to ride on a whale and do everything behind her grandpas back. I used the word in a book called The giver. The book is all about when a little boy could get memorys from the giver and that he had courage to get pain from the memorys that the giver gived him and I think he had courage for that.
Thier were some Internet Sights that they had the word . The first one was www.clomedia.com and the senyence was courage is a big word when was the lats time you alttered the word or said now thats courage. The other internet sight is www.siriusdog.com tthe setence before we get into the description of how the courage test is performed and why it is needed, you should know some thing about were in coming from. The last internet sight that i saw is www.amazon.com the sentence was the language of courage and inner strength: A wonderful gift to inspiring thoughts.
The quotes that i found in the internet was the author named Ambrose Redmoon and his quote said courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something esle is more important than fear. The second author is Andre Gide and his quote says man cannot discover, men oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the share. The third author is Carl Herman Voss his quote says courage is what it takes to stand up and speak, courage also what it takes to sit down and listen. The fourth author is Corra Harris and his quote says the barrest thing you can do when you are not brave is to profess courage and act accordingly.
The word that I choosed was that my family had courage to do anything. My family has not been affraid of anything like getting in to fights or doing something. At the other hand is that i am a friendly guy but if some one is talking stuff at me i need to do something or he will be calling me some stuff and i will not like it. It had been in my history becuase my grandpa had courage becuase he ran away from the cpos and any thing he ran for. I picked this word becuase i wanted to tell you how i wrote the word and wrote all about it.

I have done a research on the word duty. These are my findings.
The actual definition of Duty is Assigned service or business, Active military service. On the other hand, my definition for duty is Any kind of assignment or Military service.
In the story the giver you can find elements of the word duty it is a place where every person has a job or responsibility which means duty. They get their duty when they turn twelve. some jobs are harder and more important than others. Their world is black and white.
I have found the word duty twice in a magazine, Times, it was some titles of an article. The first title was "Is it a duty to obey the law?" The second title was "Do your duty."
I have found a few quotes that reflect duty, one of them is "Love can do much, but duty more" and the second "Without duty life is sort of boneless, it cannot hold itself together." last but not least "Their is no duty so much underrated as the duty of being happy."

My definition for courage is someone who uses their mental strength to overcome their own fear and pushes themselves. The book definition says courage is the mental strength to resist opposition, danger, or hardship. I really think that courage is a big part of a person because without courage many people would not be doing what they are doing today. For example, many people have courage to go fight in the wars and have the guts to go out there and kill a person that they do not know.
There are two kinds of courage. The first one is moral courage which means frequently regarded as courage in following one’s own ethics. The second one is civil courage is civilian stand up against something that is deemed unjust and evil knowing that their death, injury, or any other negative effect. I did not know there were to but I guess that anyone may have one courage instead of the two courage’s there is.
The big thing that really proved that Jonas has courage is when he left town with Gabe. He had the courage to take Gave even though it was not part of the plan. They each had to go through pain and cold times on the snow without any food or clothing support. All they had were memories and each other. Neither of them gave up even though they thought they were not going to make it.

Death
A permanent cessation of all vital functions: The end of all life. Sounds rather morbid does it not? The way it promotes ghastly thoughts and plots of murder. The vivid images of slaughtered corpses. Maybe even the typical graveyard scene with headstones that state the individual’s gory demise. Destined never to see the light of day for the rest of eternity. And who else better to assist the said damned than the old bone man himself, Death. The skeleton shrouded in a cloak of night that carries a scythe.
Death isn’t such a bad thing though, or, at least not it’s history and how it has helped shape literature and inspired authors.
The history of how the word came to be isn’t as morbid though. Death was an
Old Norse word, ‘Deyjah’ that was adopted by the gothic language as ‘dauthus’. It was soon turned into ‘death’ by the Old English language which has stayed throughout history and is still used in today’s modern language.
Many authors have been inspired by death and have incorporated it into their writings. Take for example “Shakespeare’s Sister”; at the end of the story, the main character committed suicide due to her failure in life to become an actress / writer during the Elizabethan era. As you can see, the use of this word has widely varied. But, unlike its victims, it has not reached rigormortis; but continues to live.
A permanent cessation of all vital functions: The end of all life. Sounds rather morbid does it not? The way it promotes ghastly thoughts and plots of murder. The vivid images of slaughtered corpses. Maybe even the typical graveyard scene with headstones that state the individual’s gory demise. Destined never to see the light of day for the rest of eternity. And who else better to assist the said damned than the old bone man himself, Death. The skeleton shrouded in a cloak of night that carries a scythe.
Death isn’t such a bad thing though, or, at least not it’s history and how it has helped shape literature and inspired authors.
The history of how the word came to be isn’t as morbid though. Death was an
Old Norse word, ‘Deyjah’ that was adopted by the gothic language as ‘dauthus’. It was soon turned into ‘death’ by the Old English language which has stayed throughout history and is still used in today’s modern language.
Many authors have been inspired by death and have incorporated it into their writings. Take for example “Shakespeare’s Sister”; at the end of the story, the main character committed suicide due to her failure in life to become an actress / writer during the Elizabethan era. Rienhold Niebuhr once said, "God gives us grace to accept with serenity the things that can not be changed, courage to change the things that should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other." Courage can be many different things depending on who you ask. To me it's to confront what fears you the most. To the dictionary it's mental or moral strength to venture, perservere snd withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. The word courage comes the Latin word Car, which means more at heart. Next was Old French Cier, which means heart. After that was Middle English courage and the now Courage. Here is courage in 3 different languages:

What is courage all about? Courage is mental, physical and moral strength to
combat, dare and endure danger, fear or difficulty. A person standing up to
somthing or someone involving danger and fear. The word "courage" is neither Latin nor Greek. it's Medievel Old French, meaning "heart and spirit". In Spanish courage translates to valor, avoir du in french and my>kectbo in Russian.
Moral courage more than physical courage is generally regarded as following one owns thoughts and ethics, in which it can result in an isolation from family and co-workers.
Civil courage also known as Social courage is usually referred to when the general public stand up to some issue that is wrong, evil and unfair, even though the consequences can lead to injury and even their own death.
In "The Giver", the author uses courage to demonstrate how Jonas becoming the new up coming Giver, gets the courage to run away from the community taking with him Gabriel. They both escape the community to find the Elsewhere. he runs away knowing that the consequences can become fatal to those left in the community, once he is gone all of the memories that were transmitted to him will be left to the civilians. Jonas gets the courage from all of the issues that were surrounding him first, finding out what release really is, that his dad does not have any feelings and so on.

The word "Obligation" as defined in the dictionary says, something such as a formal contract, promise or a demand, custom otherwise known as something you have to do. The origins of the word trace back to latin during 1250-1300AD said, "Obligatus". Every culture has this word just spelled differently. Like in Czech said, Povin'nust, in Spanish, Obligatorio. Last but not least in German said, Die Verpfinchtung.

A story that I have read called," shooting an Elepant". I'm going straight to the point. There's is guy in a small village that is going to shoot an elepant. They say in the village that the elepant is going crazy and distroying things. He's not the animal is just walking around the village thats all. So this guy takes out a gun to shoot the elepant and stop it. He really does'nt want to shoot the elepant but almost the whole town is watching him,Thats why he cant stop he already pull out the gun now he has the obligation to shoot it. If he does not kill it now the town is going to think thats he is weak and scared. He does'nt want that, its even harder because he's white and the village is not. He cares what the people say about him. So he shoots the elepant for a stupid reason. He shoots is and nothing happen the animal is dead and the village people leave and thats is its over. I say whats the point in that nothing. Just minutes after I think he has the same reaction as I just said. He regrets shooting it but its to late its done.

Death. What is it? Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary definition states that Death is “a permanent cessation of all vital function: end of life.” In a mythological sense Death is “the destroyer of life represented usually as a skeleton with a scythe.” Many words origins are based on an older language than ours. Death for example came from the Old Norse word ‘deyja’ and then was adopted by a Gothic language into the form ‘dauthus’, from there it went to an Old English form ‘death’, second to last it last it became a Mid. English term ‘deeth’. Then finally to the modern word ‘Death’.

In “Shooting an Elephant” a man had been trampled to death by an elephant, and a police man had to kill the elephant. In “Shakespeare’s Sister” it talks about a made up sister that was supposed to be a sibling of Shakespeare. It tells about how the women, after a while, who commits suicide due to that in Old English times women were not supposed to be writers or actresses. She would get feed up with not getting the recognition for her writings. In “The Whale Rider”, a movie, a little girl was part of a way of life, similar to Shakespeare’s sister. She had prayed to her god to send help on a particular matter. It leads up to a little more than a dozen whales being beached. They were dieing until the little girl mounted on top the lead whale which signaled for the other whales to head towards the ocean again. She went out to sea on the whale where she had almost died. And in The Giver Jonas, the main character, witnessed the release of a twin, which means the twin was put to death. Some say that he (Jonas) died at the end of the book when it left off with Jonas one of the memories or was in it.
I researched several sites for the word Death. I came up with five websites. http://www.deathclock.com/ is a website that is supposed to be able to calculate the time of a person’s death. http://www.deathonline.net/ is a site that talks about death as well as rituals. http://www.deathmetal.com/ is a site that is all about death metal music. http://www.near-death.com/ is about near-death experiences and the afterlife. http://www.deardeath.com/ is about anything death related.
Researching online lead me to a site about Edgar Allen Poe. In my opinion Poe is somewhat fascinated with death. Looking through several of his works, I found a particular stanza that interested me the most. It is written like:
“How shall the ritual be read?
The requiem how sung by you
By yours, the evil eye,
By the slanderous tongue
That did to death the innocence that died,
And died so young.”
This interested me the most because it’s hard so believe that children can die at only an early age, and not being able to experience life to its fullest.

As you can see their are a few definitions of privilege. It is from Middle English; derived from old French and from Latin privilegium-a law affecting one person.
My definition of privilege is to have the right or advantage to do things that other individuals don't have the right to do.
Privilege is demonstrated by a few authors that we have studied this semester. In The Giver, a book written by Lois Lowery, the author doesn't necessarily intricate the word privilege, but it most certainly shows you various examples. The Giver is a book in which the community is all the same. Their is no pain, no love, no feelings at all. Every citizen is assigned a ob at the age of 12; Jonas the main character receives the job as the receiver. The receiver is the most honored job and you must be selected by the previous receiver. They don't refer to it as a privilege, but an honor. I believe for it to be both an honor and a privilege because he was granted that honor. He has the privilege or special advantage that the rest of the community could not obtain.
"Shakespeare's Sister" a short story in which Shakespeare writes about a women who feels as if she has no rights-the ability to do nothing. He compares a women to a man and how they had no privileges in their days. It is asking for women privileges rather than rights.
In "Shooting an Elephant" the main character is what you could call the only law enforcement they have. The main character fights both an internal and external conflict by deciding whether or not to shoot the enraged elephant. He is the only one who has the privilege to shoot the elephant. This story is a good example of the way that being privileged is not always good. Some people take advantage of having the privilege to do certain things in a bad way.

The following paragraphs will include definitions, examples, and elements that I see fit for the word "choice".
My personal definition of choice is doing what you feel is correct and being able to do so without anyone's consent. The actual definition of choice is to select freely and after consideration.
Another definition I found that I thought was interesting was one that said choice is a mental process involved with the process of judging multiple options and selecting the best one according to interest and consequence.
Synonyms of this word include, but are not limited to; alternative, decision, distinction, option, preference, and judgement. You can clearly see how all these words relate.
I'll also list a few translations of this word. In Italian: scelta, Portuguese: escolha, French: choix, and Spanish: opcion.
Choice is widely interpreted in the world of politics and economics. Being that we base our government on a two-party system in America, choice is a big thing.

Choice isn't even a word to them. By reading this story you will learn to value choice.

“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do that thing which you think you cannot do.” is an inspirational quote given by Eleanor Roosevelt.
The value I have chosen is courage. Mental or moral strength to venture is how it is defined but I understand it as when you perform an act which you are scared or uncomfortable to do. The word courage comes from the French word heart or coeur, as in when you have the heart to do something.
“Do you have the courage to follow your heart?” As I have surfed the web I have found examples where the word courage has been used, as in the previous quote. I found websites where the word was used for having courage to overcome tough disabilities (courage.org), to companies “Building courage to lift business performance” (courageinstitute.org). Maybe the single greatest quote I have found out of my list is “In my experience, the single greatest barrier to implementing a succession strategy is courage.” As posted in summitadvisory.org. And another quote that complements this past quote perfectly is one about soldiers. “Courage is a quality reserved for soldiers.” And it re-enforces the stereotype about great hero’s performing great courageous acts.
Referring back to when I stated that courage is having mental or moral strength we can tie it in with the novel “The Giver”. Jonas has to have mental strength to continue with his training and taking in all of the village’s worst and painful memories. Jonas also had to have moral strength to escape the village in order to save the life of Gabriel.
With the experience with Jonas and with the quote from Eleanor Roosevelt we all should have courage to face our greatest fears even if it’s mental or if it’s moral.

The word value(s) is just another word for having morals. That is my opinion for what it means, however the dictionary might say it differently. The word value means a principle, standard, or quality considered worthwhile or desirable. On the other hand it has so much meaning to it, than what the dictionary or I might have wrote.
In my search for discovering, what this word means. I found that it takes place in the entire stories I’ve read in my English class. In the story “Shooting an Elephant” I discovered that the man was shooting an elephant just because he had standards in his job. Although, he did not like his beliefs and the standards he had in his life, he had values still. In the next story “The Giver” we saw that a young boy named Jonas was given an assignment the receiver of memories. The Giver gave young Jonas memories about the previous pass and how life use to be. Only him and the Giver know about the pleasures and painful things we know in life. Jonas saw and learned about values something people did not know.
The word can be found and looked up in many places. I saw a great quote by a man named Jonathan Alter, “The speech was a summons back to the patrician values of restraint and responsibility”. You can see that the word was a great importance for the Greek Romans. I also saw a great Internet site that said, “People have very different morals values”. Which, is very true not everybody is the same, but it is important that people can find their values in life. Here are two ways to say values in different languages. George Orwell in "Shooting an Elephant" had a choice on killing the elephant or not. He did not want to disappiont the people so he shot it in the head like about ten plus times. It took, I think about half an hour for the elephant to die. He didn't have to shoot the elephant, he could've left it alone. Since the elephant went crazy when people were around, I guess you could say the people pressured him to kill the elephant but still had a choice not to.
