Karina Ramirez Final Exam Essay

An functinal and dysfunctional families is a perfect example for the book "The Giver." If you see how this century's families are and you compare our lives to the book, you will be surprised. You might think that they are functional family but as you start having thoughts that they are dysfunctional family.
Jonas's family are well organized, they even have a life which many think they should have. When it comes to dinner they share what they did or how they feel. They tell each other everything like they are best friends. The city even tells the teenagers to do community services in order to get their job. They give certain hours before the ceremony of their age.
No one ever does anything bad, they have many things to do because they do not watch T.V or even play with toys (teens). You could say they grow up pretty quickly for their age. By age twelve they already have their real job and start practicing on their major. Jonas's parents do not have to worry about anything bad happening to their kids because everyone in their city are the same. They all have same stuff as everyone.
You must start thinking that they are mostly dysfunctinal family when everyone is watching you, they know when you did something bad. When Gabe was brought home they could not keep him because every family could only have two childrens. Then the counselor choses the teens job when they turn twelve. Everyone was picked with their own match to become a couple. When they had stirrings they had to take pills to stop the stirrings.
The people had to lie because of their job and they did not care because they had no feelings. Jonas thought that they should have color, weather, and most importantly feelings. They did have a dysfunctional family because they seem perfect and look everyone had to lie, even hide thier feelings. By Jonas feeling all that and running away will do so much for both the people and himself. This book really relates with functinal and dysfunctional famililes.
