Hero’s Journey
The Giver
The story begins with the separation in Jonas case it’s when he is chosen as “The receiver”, in his community. In this case he doesn’t have to leave home or his family for his training. The calling doesn’t really apply to Jonas, because his title was chosen by the council, it wasn’t his dream or anything like that. Jonas threshold starts, I think at the ceremony of the 12’s where he is at. He is given the title as “receiver” and he decides to go for it. Jonas decent start when his formal training begins. He doesn’t know what to expect, his nervous and a little scared. They told him that he would feel pain; well Jonas doesn’t know what to make of that. This is when he starts his journey.
His Initiation starts when first shows up for his training and he finds his new mentor, the current “receiver”. Also by going to this training his is looked upon as so sort of a hero by the community. Like as if he did some heroic deed. Jonas’s abyss come to affect when he has a couple of training lessons with his mentor, and he gets all this dreams, and has new feelings, thoughts and questions. At this point his he’s in the abyss because know what will come next, what will happen to him, and what will it lead up to.
His mentor is the current “receiver” he is the one that holds all the community’s memories. Full of sprit and kindness, he helps Jonas. He is a very old man, with long gray beard that teaches him in his training. Answers his questions and helps him with problems of everyday life. The transformation of Jonas in the story is when he finds out the truth about everything, mainly when he sees’s the tape of a baby being killed, or what they called being released. Once he knows enough about his training he realizes that these people in the community don’t know pain, fear, love, or guilt. There killing and don’t even know what their doing. He can’t handle all this things at once, and doesn’t want any part in this anymore. In this story there is no return for Jonas, no return home or with his family he just can’t take this so he leaves with Gabe his “Brother”. He takes Gabe because they were going to release him. He leaves and I think, he would never return.
Jonas has a big creation in this story. He uses his new found wisdom and knowledge to know weather something is good or bad. Which most people can’t tell the difference in his community. He also helps Gabe by saving his life. In this story he doesn’t come back and create a utopian society, he just gets himself out of a bad one. What I like about Jonas , is at the end he thought not only of him self but of some one else to, great quality
