In the Giver you could say that the families in that book are functional, well to them. They wake up every morning and do everything perfect you could say. Everyday thay do the same thing.
Everything is chosen for the people. The little girls have to wear ribbons on their hair or else they well get in trouble. The boys and girls have certain year when they get bikes aswwell. When kids turn to 12, a job is chosen for them based on what they did everyday. Before they are assigned a job they have to do community service.
to the people that are reading the book, this is not right. The families don't believe in love, there is no sex, and their families are chosen (includes: Wife, husband, kids nad how many).Having wet dreams and thinking of the oppisite sex well get you in trouble, you well have to take a pill if that happends.
If a laborer has twins, the heaviest twin survives and the other get killed. By the way they have no feelings and have no problem with that. The old people get killed aswell. They get advise from one person "The Giver" that knows our ways. The people don't follow the advise because they think the people wouldn't function in our ways.
