The essay you are about to read is about my findings and opinions of a hero's journey. The individual I will describe and talk about is Chuck Noland. I believe he completed a hero's journey and I will say why this is my opinion in the following paragraphs.

The separation in Chuck Nolands' story is when he is parted from human contact due to a terrible tragedy. To me, his calling is his desire to return home to his life, but especially to his wife, whom he loves. The threshold is when he decides not to give up and take his life; instead he chooses to learn to live in a new environment. Going from the plane to the island is his descent in his tragic journey.

Chuck Noland has an inspiring initiation. His initiation is to learn how to survive; to start living in a new way. The abyss, in his case, is the island that he cannot escape, the time just passes and passes. In my opinion Chuck Noland doesn't have a mentor. He is alone and only has himself. He comforts and encourages himself through a ball he calls Wilson. That ball is his only way to talk and somewhat socialize to not go insane. The ball has no thoughts or life to inspire Chuck in any way. The transformation Chuck goes through is simply amazing. He goes from being a businessman to being a wild man that can withstand any condition and situation with the endurance, discipline, strenght, and mentality he has taught himself.

The return of Chuck Noland, I think is simple. His rescue and return is just that, his return. He must adapt to what once was the only way he knew of living. The creation that takes place in this story is incredible. Chuck Noland was forced to live in a completely different world and instead of losing faith and giving up he created another man out of himself. I don't think he even knew what he was truly capable of. His creation was teaching himself to be a whole new person in order to survive.

So there you have the story of Chuck Noland and his fight for sanity and survival. He truly completed a hero's journey. He not only fought mother nature, but he also had to stand against his pessimistic thoughts and need to give up. He won the war and became his own hero. There's no need for more words, this mans' life was clearly a hero's journey.
